This page is a recent addition to this site. Like most artists, I have always sketched, but until now I have never seen this part of my work as being for public consumption. However, I have had requests to make this work available, so here it is.

Most – but not all – are holiday sketches. This makes them different in more or less every way from my other work. In the studio, I explore an evolving set of abstract ideas – the results can be seen chronologically in the Gallery pages. The sketches, however, are not created with the same ideas: they are the results of a more innocent engagement with places and materials; meditations on things seen and how the media might be used in response. They are outcomes of looking, thinking, exploration and mindfulness, innocent of any pursuit of a goal or even the thought that they would ever be seen by others. Some are rapidly executed; others are heavily laboured. Some have writing on them. They are necessarily of things and places, but their execution was concerned more with process than the thing represented. For this reason, the same view is sometimes rendered many times over. All will be signed on the front or reverse. All are offered as seen.

They cover several decades and are listed here not chronologically, but in the order in which I have unearthed them from shelves and boxes. They are on paper, are A5 unless otherwise stated and are unmounted and unframed.

Please note: many of these are watercolour or ink and wash sketches. As such, they will be prey to light degradation and need to be properly protected from light.
